Step 4: Build a Website

Lesson 4 Module 1

Building Your Own Niche Website

For today’s lesson, you’re going to learn how to build your own niche website that looks great right from the get-go.

As you're going to start with a free website it will be a subdomain, not a bought domain name. So your website is going to be called whatever you choose followed by "siterubix.com". Domain names can only have letters, hyphens (dashes) and numbers as part of the URL. No spaces or special characters.

Use the handy gizmo below to see if your chosen subdomain name is available right now.

Choosing a Theme

While it’s actually possible to build a website in less than 30 seconds it’s going to take a bit longer to decide on the look and feel of your site.

The theme you choose determines the way your website looks. With some themes you can tweak some of the options such as the color scheme but it's best to start with something simple that you don't need to modify straight away. Writing content is far more important than messing about with the way your website looks.

Take the time to choose your theme now because after your site has been built your choices of themes will be limited to the one you’ve chosen and a couple of WordPress standard themes. Premium members have the choice of thousands of themes so keep that in mind when you're thinking about upgrading. Premium members can also purchase their own dot com domain name so their websites do not have to have the "siterubix.com" extension. Hosting for multiple domain names is also included in the premium membership.

There are 12 theme choices available to starter members.

For each of the available themes click on the Details button or click the link above to get more information about that particular theme.

You’ll want to choose a popular theme that has great support through the Support Forum at wordpress.org. Make sure that the theme has been updated recently (within the last 3 or 4 months) to ensure that it’s compatible with the current version of WordPress.

Use the gizmo above or the button below to start building your own niche website. And I’ll see you in the next video.
